Georgia–Europe Time-Zone Overlap for Technology Teams

Georgia stays on UTC+4 year-round.

Georgia does not change clocks seasonally. The European side creates the seasonal shift. Central Europe moves between UTC+1 and UTC+2; the UK moves between UTC+0 and UTC+1.

Plan around overlap, not identical schedules.

A team does not need eight identical hours to collaborate well. Four to six reliable hours are often enough for pairing, reviews, product decisions and live support when the remaining work is documented asynchronously.

Treat overlap as a service-level decision. Product discovery, architecture discussion, pair debugging and incident coordination need live windows; backlog work, implementation, documentation and many code reviews do not. Classifying work this way reduces unnecessary meetings.

Example working patterns.

• Tbilisi 10:00–18:00 → strong overlap with Central European afternoon.
• Tbilisi 11:00–19:00 → later overlap for UK-heavy teams.
• On-call or incident work → define separate coverage; do not stretch normal hours indefinitely.

Use time-zone difference as a design constraint.

Move routine status updates to writing, batch recurring meetings, protect focus blocks and avoid making the Tbilisi team permanently attend late-evening calls. Sustainable overlap is a retention issue as well as a delivery issue.

Central Europe: design around the afternoon overlap.

For teams in Germany, Czechia, France, Austria or similar Central European zones, the strongest shared window often runs from late morning/early afternoon in Europe into the Tbilisi afternoon/evening. A Tbilisi 10:00–18:00 or 11:00–19:00 schedule can create several hours of comfortable overlap without pushing routine work late into the night.

During European daylight-saving time the offset is smaller; in winter it increases by one hour. Keep recurring calendar events anchored to the intended local working window rather than assuming the offset never changes.

UK teams need slightly more intentional scheduling.

The UK is one additional hour behind Central Europe. A Georgian engineer can still collaborate effectively, but morning UK meetings are usually poor choices for Tbilisi. Put cross-team decisions later in the UK day and use written handover for the remaining hours.

Use the offset as a small follow-the-sun advantage.

A Tbilisi engineer can start earlier than Western European colleagues and prepare analysis, code reviews or incident investigation before the European morning is fully underway. This is useful only when handovers are clear; otherwise it becomes waiting time.

Protect people from permanent schedule drift.

Distributed teams often start with a reasonable overlap and gradually add later meetings until the remote location works an unhealthy day. Track recurring meetings by local time and remove or rotate those that repeatedly fall outside normal hours.

Time-zone fairness is a practical retention factor, particularly for senior engineers who have alternative remote opportunities.

For dedicated teams, publish a small collaboration contract: normal Tbilisi working hours, the shared overlap block, rules for urgent incidents and which recurring meetings may rotate. This removes ambiguity for both the European and Georgian sides.
